Overall Approach

* The Wine Label Circle Journal is distributed to members twice yearly, in spring and autumn. It comprises 50 - 60 fully illustrated pages in A4 format.

* Articles reflect members' particular interests, the results of research, and recent discoveries.

* Reports of meetings, discussion and opinion, and reports of labels passing through the salerooms also covered.

* Editors keen to encourage a variety of contributions from members, experienced or new, and to make friendly, helpful and encouraging comments when required.

Previous Journal: Autumn 2007

The Autumn 2007 Journal was mailed to members in mid September. The theme of this Journal      was primarily silversmiths' marks and among the contents were:

  • Thoughts about 'Grimwade", comments on the coverage and composition of this book

  • Marks Examined, including several reviewed following a visit to Goldsmiths' Hall

  • Articles on marks ascribed to London or Exeter; possible ascriptions to Chester; and other marks conundrums

  • Susanna Barker Revisited, a review of the latest knowledge about this premier woman silversmith

  • Notes and Queries section, with short pieces on several topics

  • Saleroom report, labels passing through the market recently

  • The Circle's Archive: the present contents

  • Book Update: a further update of 'Sauce Labels'

Also included with this Journal was a special Supplement entitled “Early English and French Enamel Labels”. Richard Wells skilfully differentiated between various ‘families’ of enamel labels, greatly enhanced by the extensive and fine full colour illustrations.

 

Previous Journal: Spring 2007

The Spring 2007 Journal was posted to members in mid February 2007. The issue featured:

  • A major review of the wine and sauce labels of the Garrard family.

  • Armorial and animal labels

  • An exciting Dublin label commissioned to mark an event in 2006

  • Kidney shaped labels reviewed

  • Reports of labels appearing in the salerooms

  • The value of labels - and the various methods of valuation.
